Romantic Restaurants in Amsterdam: 10 Places for a Dinner Date (2026)

Updated September 2026. Amsterdam does romance well: the city is small, the canals are lit at night and a good dinner is never more than a ten-minute walk from a good hotel. What it does less well is tell you which of its hundreds of restaurants are actually made for two. This is our list — the rooms we send guests to when they book a dinner date with one of our companions and ask where to go. For each one: what makes it romantic, what it costs, how far ahead to book and which table to ask for.

1. Ciel Bleu — dinner above the city

Twenty-three floors up in the Hotel Okura, with the whole of Amsterdam spread out below the window, Ciel Bleu is the restaurant people book when the evening has to be the evening. Two Michelin stars, a French kitchen with Japanese precision and a tasting menu that moves at an unhurried pace.

Romantic because: the view does half the work, and the room is quiet enough to talk. Ask for: a window table on the canal side; say so when you book. Price: €€€€ · Book: three to four weeks ahead for a weekend.

2. Spectrum — the Waldorf Astoria’s canal-house dining room

Inside the Waldorf Astoria on the Herengracht, Spectrum has two stars and a dining room in a row of 17th-century canal palaces. Chef Sidney Schutte’s cooking is playful and precise; the setting is old money. In summer, drinks in the hotel’s private garden before dinner are the best fifteen minutes on the Herengracht.

Romantic because: the garden, the ceilings, the sense that the evening has been arranged for you. Price: €€€€ · Book: two to three weeks ahead.

3. Flore — two stars, vegetables first

In Hotel De L’Europe, on the Amstel where the river meets the canals, Flore is Bas van Kranen’s “conscious fine dining”: a two-star tasting menu built around Dutch produce, with meat and fish in supporting roles. It is the most modern room on this list and the one to choose if either of you eats plant-based.

Romantic because: river views, low light and a menu that gives you something to talk about with every course. Price: €€€€ · Book: two weeks ahead; ask for the river side.

4. Vinkeles — candlelight in an 18th-century bakery

The Dylan hotel on the Keizersgracht keeps its Michelin-starred restaurant in the building’s former bakery, ovens still in the wall. Thirty-odd seats, candles, brick and a French menu that has stayed classic on purpose.

Romantic because: it is the most intimate starred room in the city. Nobody is more than a whisper away, and nobody is listening. Ask for: a table by the old ovens; in summer, the courtyard. Price: €€€€ · Book: two weeks ahead.

5. Restaurant 212 — the counter

A single Michelin star and no tables in the usual sense: at 212, on the Amstel, you sit at a counter that wraps around the open kitchen and watch the two chefs cook your menu in front of you. It sounds like the opposite of romantic. It isn’t. Sitting side by side, sharing the same view of the same plates, is a far better way to spend a first dinner than facing each other across a white tablecloth.

Romantic because: side by side, not opposite; the food is the entertainment. Price: €€€ · Book: ten days ahead; the counter is small.

6. Bougainville — Dam Square without the crowd

On the first floor of Hotel TwentySeven, overlooking the Dam and the Royal Palace, Bougainville is one star, a small room, a lot of gold leaf and cooking that borrows from the whole of the old Dutch trade routes. Nobody walks in from the square; it is quiet, which on Dam Square is a luxury in itself.

Romantic because: the room is tiny and glamorous, and the view is the postcard. Price: €€€€ · Book: two weeks ahead.

7. Rijks — dinner beside the Night Watch

The Rijksmuseum’s own restaurant, one Michelin star, sits in the museum’s Philips Wing with its own entrance from the garden. Joris Bijdendijk cooks Dutch produce with a lighter hand than the building suggests; the room is high, bright and calm. Ideal if you have spent the afternoon in the museum and don’t want the evening to feel like a change of subject.

Romantic because: culture and dinner in one evening, with no taxi in between. Price: €€€ · Book: a week ahead; earlier for Saturdays.

8. De Kas — a greenhouse in the park

Twenty minutes east of the centre in Frankendael park, De Kas is a 1926 municipal greenhouse turned restaurant. The kitchen grows most of what it serves in the beds and greenhouses around you; the menu is whatever was picked that morning. Go in daylight, in late spring or summer, and take the table in the garden.

Romantic because: glass, greenery and evening light — the least “restaurant-like” restaurant in Amsterdam. Price: €€€ · Book: a week ahead; ask for the garden or the chef’s table in the greenhouse.

9. MOON — the revolving room

On the 19th floor of the A’DAM Tower across the IJ from Central Station, MOON revolves slowly through a full circle while you eat, so you get the harbour, the city and the water each once during a three-course dinner. The food is good rather than starred; you come for the ride and the lights.

Romantic because: the view keeps changing and the ferry back across the IJ is free and rather lovely at midnight. Price: €€€ · Book: a week ahead; ask for a window seat at sunset.

10. Café Caron — the bistro

The one place on this list where you will not need a jacket. A French family bistro on the Frans Halsstraat in De Pijp: steak-frites, a short wine list, tables close together and a room that fills with noise and warmth by eight o’clock. For a second dinner rather than a first, or for a night when the point is to be comfortable.

Romantic because: it feels like Paris, and nobody is performing. Price: €€ · Book: a few days ahead.

• Bussia (Jordaan) — Piedmontese cooking on a quiet canal corner; the most romantic Italian in the city.
• Jansz. (Pulitzer Hotel) — a former apothecary turned brasserie in the Pulitzer’s row of canal houses; excellent for a lighter dinner before a canal walk.
• Wolf Atelier — a glass box on a disused railway bridge over the water on the Westerdoksdijk; ask for a table at the end of the bridge.

Planning a dinner date in Amsterdam

A few things we have learned from arranging hundreds of these evenings:

1. Book the restaurant before you book anything else. The starred rooms fill three weeks out for Fridays and Saturdays; a Tuesday is easier and quieter.
2. Start earlier than you think. A canal-side aperitif at seven, dinner at eight, a walk afterwards — an evening with breathing room is more romantic than one that runs late.
3. Tell the restaurant it is a special evening. They will give you the better table without being asked twice.
4. Say what you both don’t eat. Tasting menus adapt happily if they know in advance, and badly if they don’t.
5. Let the evening have a second half. Dinner is the middle of the night, not the end of it. Most of our companions are booked for dinner plus the hours after — see the dinner rate on each profile.
