Romantic Restaurants in Amsterdam: 9 Places for a Dinner Date (2026)

Updated September 2026. Amsterdam is a good city for a romantic dinner. It is small, the canals are lit at night, and most good restaurants are a short walk from a good hotel. The hard part is knowing which of them suit two people on a date. This is the list we give guests who book a dinner date with one of our companions and ask where to go. For each restaurant we say why it works for a date, how far ahead to book and, where it matters, which table to ask for.

1. Ciel Bleu — dinner above the city

Ciel Bleu is on the 23rd floor of Hotel Okura, and from the window tables you look out over most of Amsterdam. It has held two Michelin stars since 2007. The kitchen serves an international tasting menu at a slow pace, and the room is quiet enough to talk in. The view does half the work on a date.

Ask for a window table when you book. For a Friday or Saturday, book three to four weeks ahead.

2. Flore — two stars, vegetables first

Flore is in Hotel De L’Europe, on the Amstel. Chef Bas van Kranen calls his cooking “conscious fine dining”: a tasting menu built on Dutch produce, mostly from biodynamic growers, with vegetables at the centre and meat and fish in smaller parts. It holds two Michelin stars and a Green Star for sustainability. It is the most modern room on this list, and the one to pick if either of you eats plant-based.

The river views and low light suit a date, and every course gives you something to talk about. Book two weeks ahead and ask for the river side.

3. Vinkeles — candlelight in an 18th-century bakery

The Dylan hotel on the Keizersgracht keeps Vinkeles in its former 18th-century bakery, and the original ovens are still in the wall. The room has nine tables, candlelight and brick, and the French cooking has a lighter, modern touch. Vinkeles holds two Michelin stars.

It is one of the most intimate starred rooms in the city. Tables are close, and nobody is listening. Ask for a table by the old ovens, or in summer for one looking onto the garden. Book two weeks ahead.

4. Restaurant 212 — the counter

212, on the Amstel, has two Michelin stars and hardly any tables in the usual sense. You sit at a counter of about two dozen seats around the open kitchen, where chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot run the team that cooks your menu. For a first dinner, sitting side by side and watching the same plates arrive is easier than facing each other across a white tablecloth, and the kitchen gives you something to watch between courses.

The counter is small, so book about ten days ahead.

5. Bougainville — Dam Square without the crowd

Bougainville is on the third floor of Hotel TwentySeven and looks straight out over the Dam and the Royal Palace. It has one Michelin star and a small room in warm fabrics and bronze. Chef Tim Golsteijn puts Eastern flavours such as green curry and za’atar next to French cooking. Nobody wanders in off the square, so the room stays quiet, which is rare on the Dam.

Book two weeks ahead.

6. Rijks — dinner beside the Night Watch

Rijks is the Rijksmuseum’s restaurant, in the Philips Wing with its own entrance, and has one Michelin star. Joris Bijdendijk cooks what he calls the cuisine of the Low Countries: mostly Dutch vegetables and produce, with the foreign flavours that trade brought into Dutch cooking. The room is high and bright. It works well after an afternoon in the museum, because you go from the galleries to dinner without a taxi.

Book a week ahead, and earlier for a Saturday.

7. De Kas — a greenhouse in the park

De Kas is in Frankendael park, about twenty minutes east of the centre, in a municipal greenhouse from 1926. The kitchen grows much of what it serves, in the beds around the greenhouse and on a field in the Beemster polder, and the set menu changes with what has been picked. It has had a Michelin star since 2022. Go in daylight in late spring or summer, when the glass and the evening light make it the least restaurant-like room in Amsterdam.

Book a week ahead, and ask for a table in the garden if the weather allows.

8. MOON — the revolving room

MOON is on the 19th floor of the A’DAM Tower, across the IJ from Central Station. The room turns a full circle every 45 minutes, so over the four-course dinner you see the city and the water from every side, more than once. The food is good but not starred, and people come for the view. The ferry back across the IJ is free and a lovely ride at midnight.

Book a week ahead and ask for a window seat at sunset.

9. Café Caron — the bistro

Café Caron is the one place on this list where you will not need a jacket. The Caron family runs it as a French bistro on the Frans Halsstraat in De Pijp, with a short wine list and tables close together, and by eight o’clock the room is full and loud. It suits a second dinner better than a first, or a night when you both want to be comfortable. It feels like a bistro in Paris, and nobody is putting on a show.

• Bussia, on the Reestraat in the Nine Streets, cooks Italian food from Piedmont and has a long list of Piedmontese wines. In our view it is the most romantic Italian in the city.
• Jansz. is the Pulitzer hotel’s modern Dutch restaurant. You can walk in through a historic apothecary, and a few tables look onto the canal. It is a good choice for a lighter dinner before a walk along the canals.
• Wolf Atelier is a glass room on an old railway bridge over the water at the Westerdoksplein, five minutes’ walk from Central Station.

Planning a dinner date in Amsterdam

A few things we have learned from arranging these evenings:

1. Book the restaurant before anything else. The starred rooms fill three weeks ahead for Fridays and Saturdays. A Tuesday is easier to get and quieter.
2. Start earlier than you think. An aperitif by a canal at seven and dinner at eight leave time for a walk afterwards, and an evening with room in it is more romantic than one that runs late.
3. Tell the restaurant it is a special evening. Most will give you a better table.
4. Tell them in advance what either of you does not eat. Tasting menus adapt easily with notice and badly without it.
5. Plan for after dinner. Most of our companions are booked for dinner and the hours after it, and the dinner rate is on each profile.
